Let’s create a new Totnes Co-housing and Rewilding Community
Broomborough House Farm is for sale - right on the edge of Totnes, adjacent to the Follaton Arboretum and community orchards, and just 20 minutes walk from Totnes centre!
Our vision is to create a new Totnes co-housing community, at the heart of a collectively owned rewilding project.
Is this for you? Be part of the rewilding, or buy-into the cohousing, or support us in purchasing the farm.
The Rewilding Collective is looking to buy the surrounding 164 acres and to work with the Regenerative Community co-housing group to buy the buildings. We will only be rewilding the areas that are not suitable for plant based agriculture. The flatter areas can be used for organic veg growing, orchards and camping.
The property is on the market and, being so well placed, will soon get snapped up so we need to move fast. Do get in touch to find out more and tell us about your current situation and housing aspirations.
The Rewilding Collective
"Environmentalism in the twentieth century foresaw a silent spring, in which the further degradation of the biosphere seemed inevitable. Rewilding offers the hope of a raucous summer…" George Monbiot
Overview
The Rewilding Collective is a Charitable Community Benefit Society offering a practical route to ecological restoration. In an age where the silence of our countryside has become normalised, we are committed to establishing a network of rewilding projects, each over 100 acres, across the UK. We aim to return the hum of life to our landscapes, safeguarding biodiversity through innovative models of land access and governance.
Transforming Land Access
The Rewilding Collective’s aim is to empower the community to steward and co-own land that has previously been under private ownership. This land is frequently misused and exploited, and nature and the community suffer as a result. For those seeking a tangible environmental legacy, The Rewilding Collective offers a vehicle to invest in the restoration of British ecosystems. Rewilding and regenerative agriculture bring life and biodiversity back to the land. Threatened species can re-establish themselves, greenhouse gases are locked into soil and plants as part of a wider, healthy ecosystem.
Sociocracy
Both The Rewilding Collective and Regenerating Community use an approach called Sociocracy. This helps us organise and make decisions together in a way that fosters inclusivity, participation and impactful collaboration. This is a key aspect of co-creating and maintaining our grassroots, community-based culture and intention. More details are available here.
Shares
You can buy into the rewilding project for a minimum shareholding of £10,000 (plus a further £1,000 to go towards purchase and development costs), up to a maximum of £100,000.
Regenerative community
Local Totnes Community Assemblies have repeatedly raised the need for more financially accessible and community-led housing. Regenerative Community aims to establish co-housing with a range of units to suit differing needs, and with the aim of supporting ‘change-makers’ of many kinds. After looking at many properties and offering on a couple, Broomborough House Farm is by far the most suitable property we have come across for this project.
Broomborough House farm
This property is 164 acres of mostly steeply sloped farmland, running along the southwest edge of Totnes, in Devon. There is a seven bedroom Grade II listed country house with an additional three-bedroom annex flat within the main house, a one-bedroom annex abutting the main house to the west, and four estate cottages. There is a range of traditional and modern agricultural buildings close by the residential spaces.
From our research, viewings and advisor reports, we have concluded that Broomborough House Farm would be highly suitable for a cohousing and rewilding project.
The property is being sold in four lots, with Lot One including the buildings and some land. Lots Two, Three and Four comprise land currently used for grazing, with scope for plant-based food production and rewilding. We need to raise approximately four million in order to make a competitive bid for all four lots.
You can buy into the cohousing and become a resident member, or use it as a rental investment, or provide a bridging loan for someone to buy into the scheme.
